"Being immersed in nature brings people closer together and provides an acute (re)perception of our small place in the world."
My two daughters (28 and 30) and I did the 3 Capes Track with the Tasmanian Walking Company over new years' 2026. What an amazing experience. My daughters have hiked extensively, but for me it was my first multi-day walk. Being immersed in nature brings people closer together and provides an acute (re)perception of our small place in the world. Carrying only a day pack means you can pay attention to the surroundings more. To be a little more present.
I'm a hopelessly devoted single dad and have always travelled with and been close to my girls. But sharing this experience was one of the best experiences of my life. Nature is their domain and I was grateful to keep up with them and to enjoy the sheer beauty of the pristine, unique Cape environment.
A highlight was the lodges, a haven to relax after a day's walking, enjoying a glass of wine and getting to know our fellow travellers. I loved watching my daughters interact with other guests at night over dinner or a glass of wine and how they formed connections. I also enjoyed watching the connections formed within families where their younger children interacted with other guests and my daughters. The food was amazing, delicious, and, I'm so thankful to Tas Walking Co that they catered beautifully for my daughters, both vegans, with delicious food. And of course, I marvelled at Bill, our guide, with his wisdom and insights, where his life experience on history, nature, and respect for our indigenous peoples really went beyond the standard tour guide job description.
I'm putting together a photo book of our adventure as a family memento, something the girls and I can share in the future. I've already booked my next Tas Walking Co adventure to Kangaroo Island! Thanks to the team. A wonderful experience.
